Every collection has its own history.

Some works have been carefully framed and looked after for decades. Others have been reframed several times, repaired with the best intentions, or simply left untouched for many years. Part of our role is to understand what you're working with, identify any issues that may need attention, and explain the options available. Where useful, we can do this on site and bring pieces back to the workshop when further work is needed.

Sometimes that leads to a simple improvement, such as replacing ageing materials or upgrading the glass. It might mean recommending conservation treatment before reframing, or moving a work into archival storage until it's ready to be displayed again. Just as often, it's confirming that the existing framing is already working well.

We can also assess works and prepare framing quotes for insurance purposes, whether for an individual piece or a larger collection.

Collection care often involves more than one area of expertise.

We regularly work alongside conservators, curators, collection managers, auction houses and other specialists. Our role might be to design and build new framing, or adapt existing frames to meet modern conservation standards while preserving their original appearance. In other situations, we're simply helping clients understand the options before deciding what comes next.

Priorities vary from collection to collection. Some things may need attention now; others can comfortably wait.

We can help look at the collection as a whole and develop a practical plan, whether that means upgrading framing over several years, planning conservation work, improving storage, or simply establishing where the priorities lie.
